They probably think its a good replacement when we told them we like the dodging vs aiming aspect of close combat as a marine. hopefully its just to replace wallwalk/strafejumping

Yes but it's just a button to be used by anyone, theres no gradation of skill with that. And it's not as if you can dodge a skulk with sprint if they move faster than marine sprint and you probably have to look in the direction you're sprinting...

if you say sprint isn't an element of skill in any game, you probalby haven't played dod or dod:s (on a higher level). knowing how to use it in the right moment is actually very useful in those games.
it's kind of pointless to discuss things like that anyway, you'll just have to wait until you get to play it to know how it feels. also uwe are probably willing to make changes during alpha testing if a lot of players don't like the game mechanics.

sprint is ok as long as you can also shoot also there are many succesfull games where there is no sprint at all and the gameplay is perfectly balanced. there are many diffrent players that either like that kind of sprint ala cod4 and also there are many that dont like this kind of thing, it all depends on which group uwe aims for.

Considering charlie wants slightly smaller maps in ns2 I do find it a bit odd to have sprint. From what I've made so far sprint wouldn't really benefit much to the player in the maps.

dux: maybe they want to add some dynamic to battle situations where it can be skillfully used to gain an advantage (that's pretty much the essence of the posts before)

True but I find that it rather negates the aliens clear ability to out manoeuvre marines over a long distance.

Maybe the marine has the stamina of a fat NSPlayer, so he can't outmanouvre longer than a few seconds before slowing down.
They should rather add some kind of long jump like in hl1.
Of course it should only be slighty farther than a normal full speed jump (if at all) but when you can use it while standing/crouching and go in every direction (like only once in a few seconds) it would help to make close combat more interesting opposed to sprint, which rather seems to help faster map-travel.
But it seems in ns2 you don't crackjump away from the skulk, but gun-melee the skulks away from YOU, which might already be considered as movement/dodging replacement for marines.

yeah dux, Im with you man. What are they complaining about. Its not like they pre-ordered a game that was due for release last year but hasn't even seen an alpha yet. Oh, wait...
Im sure NS2 will be awesome when its finnaly out, but you cant blame people for being impatient, especially those that already PAID for the game.
You could argue though Maxx, that these people are also very, very stupid. Let's face it, UWE's track record with deadlines has always been appauling. Why would it change now, for their biggest challenge yet? They put money in knowing these facts.

If people want to cancel their pre order then ok. The fact of the matter is the investors have sway over the deadlines. There are about 10 of us making this from scratch on a brand new engine when realistically a game of this size has a team of at least 30. And can't hire any more people as everything costs money. We all work on this game to keep a roof over our heads and it gets tiring listening to all this whining from people who know nothing of what they are complaining about.
