I found a single user review for the Acer V223Hb LCD and he gave it 5/5. Looks pretty too. I might bottle it and just buy Sublime's setup exactly because i'm finding the research a time-consuming pain in the ass. I was thinking of dropping to the other RAM you suggested and using the money saved to get a cooler. The fourth core unlock sounds really good but it sounds like a trek seeking out the right batch (I did it with the E2140 to get the M0 stepping and it involved lots of annoying calls). Does anyone have any glaring objections or warning for the build below?

Scared but what the hell. I guess the crucial question is will it run NS2?

What OS are you planning to run on your machine? It may save you a bit of hassle getting two 250GB harddrives if you're thinking of running multiple OS'. (Although you can partition your drives)

I don't know... I just had a real hard time partioning one drive and then setting up Windows 7 32/64 and XP all on dual boot.

It's just to get the full use out of your RAM, you'll be using a 64 BIT OS. Yet 64 BIT OS are dogshit at running NS and cause numerous bugs. (I'm guessing you'll want to play NS on it until NS2 comes out)

Also, NS2, from what they have stated, engine wise, doesn't seem that CPU intensive, but then again I'm not completely swinged by anything the UWE team says.

What kind of bugs are there with NS and 64-bit OS? Atleast for me, there're pretty much none.

Also, many cores are not that awesome in gaming because most games can only make use of 1-2, though I assume its changing with new ones.

For the monitor, I would buy Samsung SyncMaster 2233RZ or Viewsonic VX2268WM. I mean, CRT's just pwn TFT's in gaming. I remember the disappointment when I changed from my Samsung 959NF to the TFT. If you don't have the money to buy one of those 120HZ LCD's, I'd say buy a CRT or wait until you have the money. You can get probably a good (Samsung) CRT with 20-50e. Its awesome for gaming unless you do LAN's frequently, and well LCD's are good for everything else.

I bought my computer a bit less than year ago, and it had: Intel P4 E8500 3.16ghz, Corsair 520W (Modular), 4GB Kingston, Asus P5Q LE and Radeon HD4870, and it has worked very well. I dig up those parts from a finnish computer modding site, who keep list of the best current components.

Gamma bug; colour depth; random crashers; mouse delay.

I deliberately dual booted XP just so I could play NS on this PC because I was so annoyed with how it performed on windows 7.

 

You should never run a 32Bit game on a 64Bit OS. It just will never perform as well.

I'm playing NS on Win7 Prof 64-bit and have had 0 problems so far. Constant 125 fps, no crashes or gammabugs, and most importantly, no mouse delay.

Only pros notice a difference.

And only noobs cant fix problems ;)

It should be fine, the only thing that could plausibly not be compatible is the RAM and if it is just send it back saying it's faulty...

 

In fact I've just read the specs on the mobo and it is fine. Go ahead and buy if you're desperate now but I'd suggest waiting until you know some specs for NS2. Ask Dux

There was some already released game mentioned, in which the engine/spec guy referred to when asked about NS2 specs or minimum requirements. That was minimum as in 'still well playable'. Might find it in the UWE news or podcast archive.

My honest opinon on ns2 specs, if you want to play it with no bullshit is:

I checked some of Tweadle's parts from our modding site and cpu, cooler, and gpu were recommended, but if I had the money I'd go for i7, Asus Mobo and probably for top Geforces, although ATI has the edge price-quality wise atm.

I remember they were going for like BF2-minimum specs.

I'd recommend the opposite. An ATI and AMD rig.

 

Also, never buy a Gigabyte MOBO. From my experience they are bloody awful. Go for Asus or MSI.

i'd suggest you to go for intel cpu instead of amd and some decent mb instead of great gfx, but you'll do whatever you want ; )

i can tell from my experience that i bought quad core around 2 years ago decent mb and there's no game that is able to crash it ; P ofcourse everything might change ;P

Been overclocking on my Gigabyte board for 3 years and it's fine Tweadle.
