Apparently recent Steam update was lethal to NS causing crashes when entering command mode, steam validation errors and what not. Anyway, Asmodee made a quick AMXX fix which however was outdated when valve released newer steam update which solved the problem in question.

This is for all the NS server admins: please update your server (reinstall the steam/valve -parts if necessery, create a file steam_appid.txt using a text editor, write only number 70 to the file and save it. Then start NS server, and it should work fine.
